Strategies for successful exam preparation are based on workshop with Oksana Tsegei, Macmillan consultant.

Matching headings to paragraphs.
It tests students' ability to understand general information.
1. Read all the paragraphs quickly to get a general understanding.
2. look for key words in each paragraph and try to match with the most obvious headings first.
3. Read the left ones in more detail.
4. Be careful if there are more headings than paragraphs - there are often tricks with the same words in paragraphs and headings to confuse you.
5. Never leave answers blank in an exam.

Multiple-choice activities.
In this type of activity you choose the best answer from three or four different answers.
1. Read the text quickly to get a general understanding.
2. Read all the answers to each question carefully. Sometimes the difference between two answers is just one word.
3. Find the section of the text where you think each answer comes and read it agein slowly, in more fetail.
4. If you are not 100 % sure which answer is best, take away any answers which you know are not correct.
5. When you finish, check that you have an answer for each question.
6. Never leave answers blank in an exam.

Missing parts of sentences activity.
In this type of activity you have to fill gaps in sentences with their parts.
1. Read the text quickly to get a general ides of what it is about. To do this type of exercise you do not usually have to understand every word, so do not panic if you donn't understand everything.
2. Read the extracts which go in the sentences. Waht does each talk about?
3. Find the sentences which correspond to the extracts and read them again slowly, in more detail. Put each part in the most probable gap, paying attention to GRAMMAR RULES (gerund, infinitive, bare infinitive, word order etc).
4. Check by reading the text with your answers in the correct place. Do the filled phrases go logically in senteces?
5. Check that you have an answer for each question. Never leave answers blank in an exam.

Use of English. Multiple-choice activities.
1. Read the complete text WITHOUT thinking about the gaps. This helps you to get a general understanding of the text.
2. Before you look at the answers, think about the TYPE of word you need (verb, pronoun, article, noun etc) and the general MEANING.
3. Read the answers. Choose the one which you think is the best. Look very carefully at the words which come just BEFORE and just AFTER the gap.
4. If you are not sure which answer is right, take away any answers which you know are not correct.
5. Read the sentence again with your answer in the gap to check it.
6. Never leave answers blank in an exam.

Writing. Rules of writing.
1. Read the title or question carefully to make sure you know what you have to write.
2. Brainstorm ideas to include in the composition and write them down as notes.
3. Decide how to organize your notes in a logical way. Group similar ideas into paragraphs.
4. Write a first version of your text.
5. Check your work for mistakes with punctuation, capital letters, word order, spelling, tenses, vocabulary, agreement between the subject and the verb.
6. Edit your work. See whether you have unnecessary repetitin of words or ideas in the text. Make sure there is no irrelevant information.
7. Check that you have answered the question. Also, ask yourself if the person reading your composition will understand it easily / find it interesting / informative / funny.
